What is it?
Like an initial stress response, anxiety has an important role to play in helping us get around safely in the world and it can be a beneficial ‘early warning system’ in a range of experiences. But for many people suffering from anxiety, feelings of worry, anxiety or fear are a constant feature of everyday life and are strong enough to interfere with daily activities. People with anxiety disorders are often unable to stop worrying about relatively unimportant things, and they often perceive situations as much worse than they actually are. Anxiety often disrupts work, relationships and self-perceptions and in some cases, diminishes the overall enjoyment of life. Anxiety is one of the most common mental health disorders within Australia, yet is also very treatable.
